Script: What You Say To Me

Today's post is like nothing else I've written-- a script! This is called "What You Say To Me", and I wrote it for my Creative Writing class. It's got some odd formatting because of that, but after all, it is meant to be read out loud. Either way, I hope you enjoy it. If nothing else, this was immensely useful dialogue practice. (Completed 11/9/2021.)

WHAT YOU SAY TO ME / BOUNCYPEAR, 2021 / BOUNCYPEAR.TK

SET EXT. DIAMOND COMMON, CENTER RHOMBUS

A small picnic spread is laid atop freshly cut grass. KASS and MEI sit atop it, eating a moderate lunch.

                KASS
    ...And that's how it ended.

MEI leans up against KASS, and KASS leans her head upon MEI's.

                MEI
I'm sorry, Kass. I'm so sorry.

                KASS
    Don't be.

                MEI
    Let me hug you, then.

KASS nods, and MEI puts her arms around KASS, whose eyes are watering.

                MEI
What can I do? I can't-- I can't just sit and watch you.

                KASS
    Just be here. Hold me.

Tears begin to stream from KASS's eyes, and MEI lifts her hand to wipe them away.

CAMERA PANS UPWARD, SKY FADES TO NIGHT. CAMERA PANS BACK DOWN TO A LARGE BRICK BUILDING.

KASS is seated at a desk, typing on a laptop. She then closes the laptop, and moves toward her bed.

                KASS
    *sigh*

KASS grabs her phone, and begins messaging, curled up on her bed.

                MUFFLED TELEVISION
I love you. Oh, if I could say all of what I feel...
                KASS
    Mmh-hmm.

Two knocks sound on the door.

                KASS
    Come in.

                CINDY
    Hey, Kass. Done already?

                KASS
    Wasn't too hard.

                CINDY
Figured. I'm headed out to grab some snacks, need anything?

                KASS
    ...Nah. I should be good.

                CINDY
Alrighty. See you in a bit, then.

                KASS
    Mmkay.

Cindy shuts the door behind her. Kass falls asleep soon afterwards.

Camera fades to black. Kass awakes to her phone ringing, with a call from Cindy.

                KASS
    Hey, Cin. Something up?

                UNFAMILIAR VOICE
    This is miss Kass, correct?

                KASS
Yeah. You don't sound like Cindy. Is she okay?

                UNFAMILIAR VOICE
    ...

                KASS
    ...Shit.

                UNFAMILIAR VOICE
    I'm-- I'm so sorry. She's--

                KASS
    Gone.

                UNFAMILIAR VOICE
    ...

                KASS
    Goodbye.

KASS ends the call, and lies silently for a few moments. Sleep then consumes her.

The camera returns to KASS and MEI.

                MEI
When I saw it on the news, I called you right away.

                KASS
    ...

                MEI
I think you were still asleep. I was worried.

                KASS
    I'm sorry.

                MEI
    Don't be.

                KASS
    I know.

The two sit silently for a few moments. MEI then reaches into her bag, and removes two wrap-style sandwiches.

                MEI
    Ham or turkey?

                KASS
Turkey. You know I've been trying to watch my figure.

                MEI
*chuckles* I know. But, I mean, if anyone deserves a cheat day, it's you.

MEI hands the wrap to KASS, and MEI begins eating hers alongside KASS.

                KASS
*sigh* It's going to be lonely without her.

                MEI
    Actually, about that...

                KASS
    (with mouth full) Hmm?

                MEI
I was hoping you'd help me pack my things.

KASS's face whitens, which surprises MEI, who motions in surprise.

                MEI
No no wait, not like that! I was thinking about moving in with you.

                KASS
I'd like that. Maybe not right away, though.

                MEI
    That's fair.

                KASS
You're not doing it now because she's gone, right?

                MEI
I would've done it either way.

                KASS
I figured. I mean, I'm not sure how we'd fit 3 people in my tiny room, but I think that'd have been... (KASS trails off.)
                MEI
    Part of the fun?

KASS nods, and MEI smiles.

                KASS
I guess... I guess I can be happy that you can make one of these every day for me. Unless you don't want to.

                MEI
Hey. You know I don't do it for you! I do it because it's cheaper than the cafe.

KASS pouts, and MEI gives her a light tug.

            MEI
Of course I do it for you. The cost's just an added bonus.

KASS smiles at MEI.

                MEI
I mean, if you'd've asked, I'd already be making them for you.

                KASS
Geez. You know, you're too good for me.

                MEI
Lucky for you I feel the same way.

                KASS
    C'mere, you.

KASS kisses MEI quickly on the lips.

                KASS
I love you. I know I don't say it enough.

                MEI
Nobody ever does. That's okay, though.

                KASS
    Oh? How so?

                MEI
Because I can hear you thinking it inside your mind.

                KASS
You know, if that was coming from anyone else, it'd be creepy.

                MEI
    Is it creepy?

                KASS
    ...Maybe.

                MEI
    Shoot. Forget I said anything.

                KASS
Nope! I'm going to hold this against you forever now!

                MEI
    Bwaaah! Noooooooo!

Both sit silently up against one another momentarily.

                KASS
    You goof.

                MEI
    I know.
